William Murray Gamekeeper

William MURRAY was born about 09 August 1825 in Sunderland Hall, Selkirkshire.  He was a son of Walter MURRAY and Younger KERR.  William worked mainly as a Gamekeeper however he also earned a living as a Forester and finally as an estate factor.

On 10 July 1847, William MURRAY married Janet CAIRNS in Selkirk.  Janet was born about 06 June 1824 in Peebles and was a daughter of Thomas and Agnes CAIRNS.

William and Janet raised a family and lived at various times in Gattonside in Melrose; Meadowbank Lodge in Kirknewton, Midlothian; and finally in St. Boswells, Roxburghshire.  Their story is particularly poignant as the couple lost four of their progeny to tuberculosis.

William MURRAY died on 23 September 1902 at Blinkbonny Cottages in St. Boswells, Roxburghshire.  Janet Cairns MURRAY died on 28 November 1904 in Gavinton, Roxburghshire.

Children of William MURRAY and Janet CAIRNS:

i.  Margaret Younger MURRAY, who was born about 06 December 1847 in the Melrose Parish of Roxburghshire.  Margaret married John BRUCE on 02 December 1900 in Edinburgh.  John was born about 1842 in Barton, Northumberland.  He worked as a Gardener and was the son of John BRUCE and Margaret GALLOW.  Margaret Young Murray BRUCE died on 13 January 1909 in Gavinton in the Langton Parish of Berwickshire.

ii.  Walter MURRAY, who was born about 02 July 1850 in the Melrose Parish.  Walter never married and worked as a Plasterer.  Walter died of tuberculosis on 13 January 1876 in Gattonside.

iii.  A daughter was born after 1850 and died before 1855.

iv.  Helen MURRAY, who was born on 12 October 1855 at Gattonside in the Melrose Parish.  Helen never married and worked as a Dressmaker.  Helen died of tuberculosis on 13 April 1879 in Gattonside.

v.  Elizabeth Cairns MURRAY, who was born on 22 December 1858 at Gattonside.  Elizabeth died on 19 March 1876, shortly after her brother, also of tuberculosis.
