William Henry Wood MURRAY was born on 25 August 1790, the son of Charles MURRAY, the Actor.  He married an actress by the name of Ann Jane DYKE on 9 August 1819 at St. George's Chapel in Edinburgh.  Ann was born in 1799 and was the daughter of Thomas and Johanna DYKE.  Ann was also the sibling of Bessie DYKE who married Thomas MOORE, the Irish Poet.

William Henry Wood MURRAY along with his sister Mrs. Henry SIDDONS, managed the Theatre Royal in Edinburgh.  Under their direction, the theatre was improved to the point where it was said to compare favorably with any outside London.  (For Sir Walter SCOTT's opinion of William Henry Wood MURRAY, click here.)

The portrait at right of William Henry Wood MURRAY was done in Edinburgh in 1848.  The name of the artist is unknown.

William also authored several plays including GILDEROY and CRAMMOND BRIG, which were based on incidents from Scottish History.

Known children of William Henry Wood MURRAY and Ann Jane DYKE:

i.  Charles Wilson MURRAY, who was born in 1820.

ii.  William Henry MURRAY, who was born about June of 1827 and died on 13 September 1827.

Ann Jane Dyke MURRAY died on 25 June 1827 at No. 2 Thistle Court in Edinburgh.

William Henry Wood MURRAY married secondly Ellen GRAY, probably before 1830.  Ellen was born about 1804 in Bath, Somerset, England.

Children of William Henry Wood MURRAY and Ellen GRAY:

iii.  Henry MURRAY, who was born on 1 May 1831 at No. 32 Windsor Street in South Leith.

iv.  Harriet Catherine Elizabeth MURRAY, who was born 1 July 1832 at No. 32 Windsor Street.  She reportedly was married to a Dr. SMYTHE.

v.  Arthur Alexander MURRAY, who was born on 30 July 1833 at No. 32 Windsor Street.

vi.  Robert John MURRAY, who was born 15 May 1835 at No. 32 Windsor Street.  Robert died on 30th April 1836.

vii.  Ellen Maryanne Felicia MURRAY, who was born on 24 October 1837 at No. 32 Windsor Street.  She was reportedly married to Henry LAYCOCK.

viii.  Sarah Marian MURRAY, who was born on 14 October 1839 at No. 32 Windsor Street.

viii.  George Siddons MURRAY, who was born on 06 March 1841 at No. 32 Windsor Street.

ix.  William Murray, who was born on 07 July 1842 at No. 32 Windsor Street.

William Henry Wood MURRAY died on 5 May 1852 in St. Andrews in Fifeshire.  William was buried in the Old St. Andrews Cemetery (see photo at right click on photo for larger image).  His second wife, Ellen Gray MURRAY died on 18 March 1888 in Birkenhead, England.
