Murray in Galashiels

John Murray Galashiels Master of Works

John MURRAY was born about 1820 in Galashiels.  He was the son of Walter MURRAY and Younger KERR.  John lived on Hall Place in Galashiels where he was the city's Master of Works.  On 26 November 1852, John married Margaret DALGLEISH in the Melrose Parish.  Margaret was born about 1827 and she was a daughter of George DALGLEISH and Ann Fletcher.

John MURRAY died on 06 March 1895 in Galashiels and Margaret Dalgleish MURRAY died on 18 March 1904.  They are both buried in the Ladhope Cemetery in Galashiels.  A photograph of this family's headstone is shown at right and appears here courtesy of Irene THOROGOOD, a descendant of John MURRAY's younger brother, James K. MURRAY.

Children of John MURRAY and Margaret DALGLEISH:

i.  Ann MURRAY, who was born on 06 September 1853 in Galashiels.  Ann died on 29 October 1933 in North Berwick.

ii.  Walter MURRAY, who was born in 29 March 1855 Hall Place in Galashiels.

iii.  George MURRAY, who was born on 01 April 1857 at Hall Place in Galashiels.  George died on 07 August 1858 at Hall Place.

iv.  Helen Younger MURRAY, who was born on 12 April 1859 at Hall Place.

v.  John Young MURRAY, who was born on 26 January 1861 at Hall Place.  John was a Private in the Royal Scots.  He never married and died on 03 September 1899 in the Maryhill Parish of Lanarkshire.

vi.  George MURRAY, who was born on 30 April 1863 at Hall Place.

vii.  Agnes MURRAY, who was born on 10 July 1865 at Hall Place.  Agnes died on 19 October 1867 at Hall Place.
