James Murray

James MURRAY was born 23 October 1820 in Edinburgh.  He was a son of Alexander MURRAY and Janet MOFFAT.  James (shown in photo at left, click for larger image) worked as the Postmaster of Leith.  At 86 George Street in Edinburgh on 13 January 1846, James MURRAY married Agnes RITCHIE.  Agnes (shown in photo at right, click for larger image) was born about 1824 at Peele, on the Isle of Mann.  Agnes was the daughter of Captain Colin RITCHIE and his wife Janet IRVING.

James and Agnes raised a family while living at 30 Hamilton Place in Edinburgh until about 1860, when the family moved to 6 Malta Terrace (see photo of 6 Malta Terrace at right, click for larger image).  The family lived on Malta Terrace for the better part of the next four decades.  James MURRAY, Postmaster of Leith, died on 27 October 1892 in Edinburgh.  Agnes Ritchie MURRAY died on 03 March 1897 at the home of her son, Dr. James MURRAY.

Children of James MURRAY and Agnes RITCHIE:

i.  Jessie Ann MURRAY, who was born about 09 July 1847 in the St. Cuthbert's Parish of Edinburgh.  Jessie married Samuel MARSH on 02 October 1869 in Preston, Lancashire.

ii.  Agnes Barbara MURRAY, who was born about 08 September 1848 in the St. Cuthbert's Parish.

iii.  Mary Jane MURRAY, who was born about 15 November 1849 in the St. Cuthbert's Parish.

iv.  James MURRAY, who was born 27 May 1851 and died on 02 May 1853.

v.  Alexander MURRAY, who was born about 25 October 1852 in the St. Cuthbert's Parish.

vi.  Margaret Douglas MURRAY, who was born about 25 April 1854 in the St. Cuthbert's Parish.  Margaret worked as a Telegraphist in Leith.  Margaret never married and died on 28 May 1905 at the home of her brother (James) at 1 Brandon Street in Edinburgh.

vii.  Elizabeth MURRAY, who was born on 16 May 1855 at 30 Hamilton Place in Edinburgh.  Elizabeth also worked as a Telegraphist in Leith.  Elizabeth never married and died on 29 May 1943 at 51 Great King Street in Edinburgh.

viii.  Violet Dalton MURRAY, who was born on 20 March 1857 at 30 Hamilton Place.  Violet married Thomas Salter HOLLOWAY in Edinburgh on 03 March 1879.  Thomas was born about 1856 and was the son of John Thomas HOLLOWAY and Mary SALTER.

ix.  James MURRAY, who was born on 20 July 1858 at Hamilton Place in Edinburgh.

x.  Emma Ritchie MURRAY, who was born on 25 September 1859 at 30 Hamilton Place.  Emma was married to Dr. George Munro STOCKS in 1896 in the St. Andrew's District of Edinburgh.  Dr. STOCKS was born about 1864 and died on 06 July 1914 at 28 Rankeillor Street in Edinburgh.  Emma Murray STOCKS died on 25 September 1938 at 51 Great King Street in Edinburgh.

xi.  Edith Barnes MURRAY, who was born on 23 October 1861 at 6 Malta Terrace in Edinburgh.  Edith died on 06 September 1871 in Edinburgh.
