James Dalton Murray, C.M.G.
James Dalton MURRAY was born 06 March 1911 in Edinburgh. He was a son of Dr. James MURRAY and Eleanor MORTIMER.
James Dalton MURRAY was educated at The Edinburgh Academy and then at Stowe School in Buckinghamshire in 1924. He was an avid sportsman and a member of the amateur dramatic society.
James Dalton MURRAY decided to be a diplomat some time before he entered Cambridge, where he read modern languages at Magdalene.
James Dalton MURRAYs command of languages (French, Spanish, German) served him well in the Cousular Service and he enjoyed a long and distinguished career. He was Ambassador to Romania in 1963. In 1965, he was promoted to the post of British High Commissioner to Jamaica. In 1971, he was became Her Majesty's Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary at Haiti. James Dalton MURRAY retired in 1976 at the age of 65.
James Dalton MURRAY was awarded the Companion of The Most Distinguished Order of St. Michael & St. George (C.M.G.)
While traveling to Singapore in the late 1940's, James Dalton MURRAY was introduced to Dora (Denny) Maud CARTER. (see photo of Denny Carter at left, Click on photo for larger image) Denny was born on 14 February 1924 in London, England. She came from a large family and was the daughter of Mrs. and Mrs. A. R. CARTER of East London. Denny was trained as a nurse in London and Scotland and was on her way to a Singapore assignment when she met James Dalton MURRAY.
During April of 1949, James Dalton MURRAY and Dora (Denny) Maud CARTER were married in Singapore. Denny was described as a loving mother and a diplomatic wife and hostess who was quite at home in the glamorous world of embassy receptions. Sadly, Dora (Denny) Maud Carter MURRAY died on 13 December 1958 at the Royal Free Hospital in London.
Children of James Dalton MURRAY and Dora (Denny) Maud CARTER:
i. James Colin MURRAY, who was born 13 October 1949 in Singapore. James Colin MURRAY was married twice and has a son by his first wife and a daughter by the second wife. James Colin MURRAY died on 26 January 1982 in New Forest, Hampshire, England.
ii. A daughter was born to James and Denny MURRAY in London in 1950.
iii. Another daughter was born in 1954 in Karachi, Pakistan.
On 25 September 1959, James Dalton MURRAY was secondly married at St. Paul's Church in London. James Dalton Murray and his second wife have one son and adopted another son.
James Dalton MURRAY, C.M.G., died on 04 June 1984 in Southhampton, Hampshire, England.
