Charles Wilson Murray, Esq. Alderley Edge

Charles Wilson MURRAY was born in 1820, probably in Edinburgh.  He was a son of William Henry Wood MURRAY and Ann DYKE.  Charles attended the Edinburgh Academy from 1828 to 1830.  Charles married Mary Bayne PLAYFAIR on 27 May 1853 in St. Andrews, Fifeshire.  Mary was born about 26 May 1828 in India and was a daughter of the Provost of St. Andrews, Sir Hugh Lyon PLAYFAIR and his wife Jane DALGLEISH.

Charles was trained as a merchant and had a very successful career with the Jardine Matheson Company in China.  Charles returned from China in the mid 1860's and the family settled at Alderley Edge in Cheshire.  Charles Wilson MURRAY, Esq. of Alderley Edge died in the Cockermouth District of Cumberland on 15 August 1873.

After Charles died, Mary returned the family to Edinburgh were they lived at Hollywood House on Colinton Road.  Hollywood House, named for the holly trees at it's entrance, is a beautiful home in an attractive area of the city.  The home has five bedrooms, a large drawing room, a gym, and a tennis court.  Mary Bayne Playfair MURRAY died at Hollywood House on 23 August 1886.

Children of Charles Wilson MURRAY and Mary Bayne PLAYFAIR:

i.  Jane Anne MURRAY who was born about 02 July 1854.  Jane married William Gibson BLOXSOM on 06 June 1876 at the Morningside Parish Church in Edinburgh.  William was born about 1847 and was a son of Thomas Philip BLOXSOM and Agnes Pollock WALKER.  Sadly, Jane Anne Murray BLOXSOM died on 24 April 1878 at Alderley on Kilmartin Road in Edinburgh.

Children of William Gibson BLOXSOM and Jane Anne MURRAY:

1.  Mary Agnes BLOXSOM who was born on 04 March 1877 in the St. Andrews Parish of Edinburgh.

2.  William Gibson BLOXSOM who was born on 22 March 1878.

ii.  Edith Ellen Murray who was born about 04 May 1861 in Hong Kong, China.  Edith married Andrew M. ARCHIBALD in 1889 in the Newington Parish of Edinburgh.

Children Andrew ARCHIBALD and Edith Ellen MURRAY:

1.  Sydney Charles Manley ARCHIBALD who was born about 29 October 1880.

2.  Vida Playfair ARCHIBALD who was born about 30 December 1894.

iii.  Sara Frances Townsend MURRAY who was born about 22 April 1866 near Chorley, Cheshire.  Sarah married Thomas BURNS on 03 June 1890 at the Morningside Parish Church in Edinburgh.  Thomas was born about 03 April 1853 in Lesmahagow, Lanarkshire and was a son of Reverend Thomas BURNS and Agnes Maxwell MACNAUGHTON.  Sarah Frances Townsend Murray BURNS died on 18 November 1926 at Number 3A Chalmers Crescent in Edinburgh.  Thomas BURNS died there on 15 January 1938.

1.  Agnes Mary Frances BURNS who was born on 26 April 1891 in Edinburgh.

2.  Reginald Thomas Murray BURNS who was born on 04 August 1892 in Edinburgh.
